Violent Crime Charges Require a Strong Defense

A violent crime is a criminal act involving physical and/or verbal force, usually as a means to an end. An offender may or may not use a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Violent crime cases are often complex because many factors, such as gun possession, addiction, or Fourth Amendment search and seizure violations, may be at issue. Our experienced criminal defense team in Salt Lake City will conduct an intense analysis of your arrest, identifying situations and circumstances that may be used as a possible point of defense.

In Utah, many violent crimes can be charged as a felony. When a criminal offense becomes a felony violent crime charge, the consequences could include the death penalty, life imprisonment, large fines, and parole. The felony categories and their corresponding penalties are as follows:

  • Capital Offense - Life in prison, life in prison without parole, or death
  • First Degree - Five years to life in prison and up to $10,000 in fines
  • Second Degree - One to 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines
  • Third Degree - Zero to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines
